Emerging out of the heart of Los Angeles’ Crenshaw District, Mecca Dawn is a ruggedly soulful Hip-Hop/R&B Diva Emcee. Her style is a fusion of hypnotic melodies and hard-hitting lyrical content, bringing a brand new flavor to West Coast music. We sat down with Fly Society’s First Lady to give the fans some more in sight on who Miss Mecca Dawn is, showing she’s a dynamic force ready to change the game…

“Switch Game”

First off, what’s your name? Where are you living and recording?
Mecca Dawn. I record, born & raised and living in LA…Cali.

What was your first CD purchase?
Mary J. Blige “What’s the 411″ and Dr. Dre “The Chronic” were the first albums I can remember buying for myself.

How did you end up getting into music? How long have you been rapping?
I actually started out as a songwriter, doing demos for other artists, and I had always done poetry and spoken word so I was use to rhyming in that sense. Been basically writing poetry since I was 8, everyone used to always say my writing was older than me lol.

But it wasn’t until about 2002 when I actually decided to become an artist after getting out of a situation with some people I was working with, basically told me I wouldn’t do it without them blah blah blah lol…then I linked up with H.I.T that same year and started a company, Soul Hood Ent. with him, and I’ve been rocking the mic ever since. So I’ve been rhyming for about 10 years now.

How did you end up linking up with Fly Society?
Well I was already ridin’ with H.I.T for years, so it was only natural that I’d support and be down when they all decided to start Fly Society. So I was always around, doing a lot of the business side of things with them, as well as the music. I think “Gimme That” was the first song I did with them as Fly Society, we just collabed, banged out the hook and did what we do…its all family, that’s always been the team.

Which women really influenced you as an emcee, made you want to grab a mic?
A lot of women just musically have influenced me from Betty Wright, Aretha to Mary J. Blige just as songwriters and their soulfulness…but as far as emcees Queen Latifah, Foxy, Kim, Eve, Missy, Salt & Peppa, Lauryn Hill… I mean each one made me feel like women had a place in this game and for different reasons…the main thing was that each one stayed true to her skill and voice and made me want to pick up a mic and pen and just let the world know who Mecca Dawn is. Especially, since we all know this a male-dominated genre, it was nice to also get the flipside…from female perspective that I could also relate to…made me want to offer that same kind of thing to the next generation after me.

“Gimme That”

Have you done any live shows? What’s it like being on stage performing?
I’ve done a few live shows my very first was The House of Blues. I can honestly say that there is nothing that comes remotely close to the vibe you get when you step out on the stage, surrounded by people coming out to support you or even hear your music for the first time looking to connect with you and be apart of the experience, apart of your songs.

I mean I love the studio, I love stepping behind the mic and making music, but nothing tops the anxious, nervous and excited feeling you get when you perform as an artist…I mean thats why we do it right??…to connect with the people that are out there listening and vibing to the lyrics and music you create…the best.

In your opinion, which rapper out there right now is just killing the game? Mainstream or Underground.
In my opinion, Rick Ross is bringing it. I think that “Teflon Don” album wrecked a lot of peoples years and made some people go back in the lab and start all over again. lol. That album stays in rotation…other than that I’m seeing the Young Money Camp everywhere…Wayne, Nikki, Drake, that would’ve been too obvious for me to state out the gate though lol.

What can we expect next from you?
Right now I’m working on my 2nd album “The Show”, definately coming with it on this album. It’s basically going to be a lot more commercial than the last one, but still staying true to who I am as an atist. I want this one to be fun and a little dramatic lol. I guess that’s why I named it “The Show”

It allows me to showcase all of these different deliveries and styles I have all meshed up together and lyrically gives me room to have both that edge, and still keep a little soul…kinda that beauty and the beast thing going on. Sometimes what lies underneath is a whole lot rawer than you expect, and trust me when I open my mouth and really spit… I don’t think anyone is ready for that one. lol.

Other than that I’m just doing collabs with the fam working on H.I.T’s “A Beautiful Mind” album and joints for Fly Society’s “International Passport”. Also have a dope collab I just recorded with FlyBoi out of Miami called “First Time” and a lot more in the works. Also working on designs to officially launch VixenKitty Clothing for the ladies and just grinding… I want to do it all, so it’s nonstop!
